The experimental realization of ultracold quantum gases of magnetic atoms and polar molecules with long range interaction opened a new fascinating research area. I will show how dipolar bosons on one dimensional optical lattice present a strong analogy with spin-1 Heisenberg model and a very rich phase diagram including ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and Haldane insulator phases. Finally I will give a pseudopotential description of the one dimensional dipolar interaction and I will discuss the role of the transverse confinement. This will allow to understand that, for polar molecules, additional terms in the Hamiltonian are required to have a quantitatively correct description of the system.
