PhD project :

Ab initio modeling of electronic and magnetic properties of small Wigner crystals

Topic : The thesis aims to elucidate electronic and magnetic properties of small Wigner crystals. These systems are characterized by the localization of electrons due to the strong Coulomb interaction at low average density. I will focus on low-dimensional systems, in particular on the one dimensional system where a Wigner-like phase has been recently experimentally observed. In order to achieve this goal I will use first principles methods and spin models from quantum physics. I will study the spin and charge configurations in small one-dimensional systems, extracting the coupling constants from these calculations and use them in phenomenological spin models. This will allow the prediction of properties for larger systems, where numerical modeling can be difficult.

Keywords : Wigner crystals, ab initio modeling
