Researchers from LPT and LPTMS have recently proposed a complex network approach to the harmonic structure underpinning western tonal music. Using a database of Beethoven’s string quartets, they have constructed a directed network whose nodes are musical chords and edges connect chords following each other. They have studied the properties of the network, and explored its community structure and its musical interpretation. They have also proposed statistical measures stemming from network theory which allow to distinguish stylistically between periods of composition. This work opens the way to a network approach of structural properties of tonal harmony in classical music.
