Most complex networks in nature and society show heterogeneous behaviors such as broad degree distribution and community structure. In this presentation, I talk about identification of heterogeneity in complex networks and how to use heterogeneity for mathematical understanding of complex systems with two examples. First example is about how to identify influential historical figures across Wikipedia language editions based on network structure and further analysis of selected top historical figures. Second example will be about generalized friendship paradox in complex networks and its applications on social systems.
