Simulation of quantum systems with t-DMRG

Many interesting phenomena in solid state physics are connected with strong correlations. These strong correlations make numerical simulations of such systems very time consuming. In quantum information theory strong correlations, called entanglement, are seen as a useful resource. Recently, within a context of quantum information, a new method for simulation of time evolution of quantum systems has been suggested by G. Vidal. It turns out that the method can be thought of as being a generalization of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to accommodate also time dependence. Efficiency of the algorithm depends on the entanglement generated during the time evolution. I will present the algorithm and discuss its limitations. An example will be given where an inefficient algorithm can be turned into an efficient one by considering evolution of operators instead of pure states.
